I’ve been a bad girl, I know. I promised to write, but as I peer upon your pages, it’s been almost 2 years. hasn’t it. Too much has happened to catch you up on, but I will say this: Jake wants to make me a Ranger. Imagine that! I’d be the first female Texas Ranger! Naturally, I’ve just been tickled pink by the idea, but I worry about Jake. He seems a little unhinged as of late – like he’s only sticking to our group out of obligation, not because he likes being here.
With Beau out on his own, we’ve been ordered to St. Louis to investigate and find two books. Or “books,” because they could really be anything, the Preacher says. On the train, we met a couple of nice folks, some Union soldiers who’d heard of our airship (Yes, dear diary! Airship!) , a conspiracy theorist (who has at least one true conspiracy, according to the posse), an oldtimer Jason seems to have taken to, and four girls who used to work for sabotaging the railroads out west.
Well, let me tell you one thing, those girls (three of them anyway) weren’t quitting their day jobs – halfway through the journey, they disappeared, leaving their companion, Diamond Lil, behind. Shortly thereafter, one of the bridges we crossed exploded. Oh my!
Though I suppose things like that don’t spook me none, now. Not that it ever would – just that it seems almost ordinary now that I really think about it.
Anyway, we took on Diamond as a sort of guide to watch our backs and tell us if there was anything funny about the trains we was traveling on.
We started looking for the books in one of the nine churches in town, starting with the oldest. We didn’t find much of nothing, until Tex reminded us (not so) gently that we ought to look in the belltower. Well, bless my soul but there it was – the bell had an inscription on it! Though it was incomplete.
We went to go investigate a site marked down by the former pastor of the church to see if there might be a connection. Sure enough, Kyle started doing his spirit thing, and the soul of a man who had been killed was there. It led us to a stone which glowed awful green. Of course, I just had to look at it closer – but found myself in what the injun called the Happy Hunting Grounds with Wicked and Kyle.
Well, not looking to pass this up, start asking the souls there questions about the murder and who lived in the house we was at. Found out the McKrackens lived there, same fellers who donated the bell. Innat funny Journal?
Well, the things that wasn’t people started lookin’ at us funny. so Kyle got us out of there. Still, I can’t help but feel like I left a part of me there, or maybe brought a part back out…
