So the posse entered Elm Run, as I mentioned before. I neglected to mention the towns folk was all dead, moving about but dead. The this fact didn’t seem to faze young Cher as she has stated she has spent “some time in this town”, she did advise the posse not to eat anything prepared here as most of the “food stuffs” was well beyond fresh. She told the posse of the scrolls as it was told to her by the now deceased mayor. He acquired the scrolls with a small statuette, from a traveling miracle cure merchant as the townsfolk were in the middle of the annual seasonal epidemic common here in the swamps, they were eager to acquire anything that made the season more bearable.
It wasn’t long after the cure vendor set up shop that the town started to see road agents with greater frequency that had ever been seen, the sheriff thought there must be a new band that recently entered the swamplands and thought they would be easy pickings. He and his deputies ensured that was not the case. However, when the folks in town started dying of a “mysterious affliction” The mayor ordered the sheriff to investigate the traveling merchant and his cure all. A day later the mayor and his three sons were gunned down in front of his wife Molly. She tried to flee to the sheriff but was gunned down on the stairs.
Jake after finally getting a good night’s sleep, joined the posse for breakfast where the food was not edible, grabbed some clean water from the well in the kitchen and headed outside town to cook breakfast with Mark whom decided to stay outside town as not to give up his shooting irons, returning to Saloon with food for the posse. The Preacher gave a mighty sermon at the saloon, as the vast majority of townsfolk didn’t seem to enter the church and his word even laid a few to rest. Damn good sermon.
Jake left the saloon with the sheriff’s pistols and badge (as he was one of the “saved”), and half the posse and headed to the sheriff’s office with the intension of promoting one of the deputies to sheriff, although he found all 5 deputies to be zombies bound to the service of the ghostly sheriff. Upon presenting his pistols to the deputies and them realizing there oath was full-filled “died on the spot”. This thru a curve in Jake’s plans and he pinned the towns star on his vest under the lone star.
The other half of the posse went to acquire the scrolls from the mayor’s bedroom foot chest. Beau, Belle, Wicked and Kyle entered the mayor’s previous estate, cased the downstairs office and reviewed his log books, then headed upstairs. On the stairs they heard the weeping and sobbing of a woman obviously mourning the loss of someone. Upon entering the bedroom where the scrolls were to be found, the weeping and sobbing got a lot louder, while Wicked, and Belle looked about the room for a minutes, Wicked noticed, as he turned around, his sister was gone and where she stood was a woman in a funeral dress, with a black veil that looked just like the woman in the painting above the fireplace. Her tears soaking her gloves and face, when she saw wicked standing in the bedroom she slapped him across the face (common for Belle, truth be told) however, this time the tears burned like acid on fire and caused some serious wounds to her brother, the part of the posse in the mansion decided it was time to acquire their weapons from the sheriff’s office with or without the new sheriff’s permission.
As they arrived at the sheriff’s office Jake and the others were just finishing up going thru the sheriff’s log. The party grabbed their weapons told the rest of the posse what transpired in the mansion and headed out to grab Mark as weapons were at least for now going to be allowed in town.
The posse headed off to the mansion. Whatever, spirt had hold of belle was mighty angry and the men folk about, and proceeded to pummel them in ways they haven’t experienced since that bar fight outside deadwood. (A story for another time). After finding out the spirit was immune to gunfire, and before deciding on another course of action that spirit done tore the place up. Every member of the posse even the preacher with the protection of the good lord on his side I think felt the burning wrath of the spirit. As the spirit was immune to gunfire it didn’t mean the items of furniture in the room was, so Mark proceeded to shoot up the chest where the scrolls would be to get the lock to open putting a series of good sized .45 holes in it. The preacher shot the painting above the fireplace, discovering a safe hidden behind.
The chest was finally done in by Kyle, and his war club sending the side and most of the contents especially the fragile ones to their maker. During which time Beau noticed a contingent of well-armed men lead by Jim Powers. Heading into the mansion. A few minutes later when the spirit was filially contained, Mark grabbed the scrolls from the chest and was heading toward the fire Kyle had started in the fireplace.
Jim powers told the folks in the room they was under arrest for treason / sedition against the confederacy in the attempt to destroy the scrolls, there intensions became clear. What can I say there was a fire fight… and what a fight it was most of the posse being out gunned and outnumbered suffered horrific wounds that would have killed lesser folk. Fate surely smiled on their souls this day. Clara was possessed like Belle. When the posse lit the chest on fire and dropped the scrolls in figuring they had done what they came to do, and now dealing with a new widow to lay the wrath down upon them. Mark was lost in the ensuing battle, and it was decided to throw the burning remains of the chest into the hall to get the band of Jim Power’s men to clear out. This had the desired affect only when Mr. Power’s realized the key they sought from the statuette in the chest was in the burning debris when his men put the fire out with their dusters. Fortunately, the widow kneeled down by Mark’s body to grieve his loss, giving the posse the chance to tie her up and prepare for an exorcism.
Jim Power’s and his hombres were leaving the town on the wagons they came in on when the first wagon of the three hit a carefully setup trap laid by Beau. The nitro caused all sorts of ruckus and killed 4 hombres and 3 horses before the other wagons were ordered to leave the dead and continue. Making it thru the remainder of the small nitro charges.
